This project is an additional and renovation to a "triple-decker" home. The program adds space above the second floor kitchen as a bedroom.
We explored modes of expression for our insertion: one uses a planar element of yellow stucco that brackets the addition between the existing structure and a colorful, abstract “book end”. The other drapes a "folded" roof form over the new space. It is clad in metal with dynamically articulated structural supports and railings. The non right geometry and industrial building materials contrast with the sea of clapboards and politely peaked roofs of the surrounding neighbors positioning this project firmly in the new century.
