Salem Street School Malden, MA 1995
[Earl R. Flansburgh + Associates]

Matthew's involvement on this project consisted of developing an exterior language for two wings of the school which are turned at an angle relative to the rest of the building.

The Auditorium/Library and Field House are aligned with the Boston & Maine Railroad tracks which bound one side of the site. These elements are conceived as pavilions. They are raised on piloti (columns) and are capped with shed roofs over clerestory windows. The strategy was to reduce the building to its purest elements: vertical pilasters supporting shed roofs. The interiors are bounded by taut masonry skins suspended between the columns supporting the roof.
